Position Overview
IHI seeks a motivated Research Scientist (PhD Student) to evaluate interventions aimed at reducing antibiotic misuse in Zanzibar’s primary care facilities. This role combines cutting-edge digital health tools (e.g., clinical decision support algorithms), point-of-care diagnostics, and community engagement to advance antibiotic stewardship—a critical focus in global public health.
Key Responsibilities

Research Leadership
-
Adapt and implement a digital health clinical algorithm for primary care settings in Tanzania.

Design and coordinate two cluster randomized controlled trials (RCTs), ensuring rigorous data collection and compliance with ethical standards.

Field Implementation & Capacity Building

Train and mentor healthcare providers in antibiotic stewardship through monthly club meetings and on-site support.

Conduct qualitative research (interviews, focus groups) to contextualize trial findings and identify barriers to intervention uptake.

Analysis & Dissemination

Perform advanced statistical analyses (using R, Python, or Stata) and synthesize qualitative data.

Publish at least three first-author papers in peer-reviewed journals and present findings to stakeholders.

Qualifications & Experience

Medical degree (MD/MBBS) with 1–2 first-author publications (pre-prints accepted).

Experience in digital health tools, clinical trial management, or public health research.

MSc in a related field (e.g., Epidemiology, Global Health) is a strong advantage.
Skills & Competencies

Proficiency in statistical software (R, Stata, or Python) and data visualization.

Fluency in English and Swahili (written/spoken).

Ability to work independently and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.

Motorcycle operation skills (essential for field visits in Zanzibar).
