About the Danish Refugee Council (DRC):
Founded in 1956, DRC is a humanitarian non-governmental organization that directly assists conflict-affected populations, including refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and host communities, across over 40 countries. Since 2015, DRC has been active in Tanzania, particularly in the Kigoma Region, providing integrated projects to assist refugees, asylum seekers, and host communities.

Overall Purpose of the Role:

The Team Leader for gender-based Violence (GBV) will oversee day-to-day GBV prevention and response interventions in refugee camps, including case management, psychosocial support, women/men protection, empowerment activities, community mobilization, and capacity building. The role involves regular field visits to Nyarugusu and Nduta refugee camps and surrounding host villages.

As part of DRC’s Protection team, the Team Leader will provide technical support and guidance to team members, ensuring the GBV program’s goals and objectives are met effectively. The position requires leadership, mentoring, and fostering a positive team environment while ensuring quality, participatory programming.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Program Leadership and Implementation:
    • Supervise and provide technical support to the GBV team.
    • Ensure the quality of GBV program planning, implementation, and follow-up activities.
    • Coordinate with relevant stakeholders, including local authorities and humanitarian actors, to ensure effective GBV prevention and response.
    • Conduct regular GBV safety audits and identify refugee camp and host community risks.
    • Lead the development and delivery of training on GBV-related issues to various stakeholders.
  • Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting:
    • Supervise case management activities and ensure the provision of psychosocial support.
    • Oversee community mobilization efforts for GBV prevention.
    • Collaborate with the M&E department to monitor GBV interventions and participate in assessments.
    • Ensure timely submission of program reports (weekly, monthly, quarterly) and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Coordination and Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Represent DRC in GBV-related coordination meetings and collaborate with other sectors like Camp Coordination and WASH.
    • Advocate for GBV-related issues with key stakeholders, including the government, UNHCR, and other NGOs.
  • Operational Management:
    • Lead the team efficiently using resources, including budget management, procurement, and logistics.
    • Assist in developing project plans and proposals, ensuring they meet donor requirements.

Experience and Technical Competencies:

  • Required Experience:
    • Minimum of 3-4 years of experience in protection, particularly in GBV programming, preferably in a refugee or humanitarian setting.
    • Experience with case management, referral systems, and awareness-raising on GBV issues is highly desirable.
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
    • Strong interpersonal and people management skills, with the ability to lead teams in challenging environments.
    • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with various stakeholders.

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Law, Political Science, Gender and Development, Social Sciences, or a related field from a recognized institution.

Languages:

  • Proficiency in English and Swahili (written and spoken) is required.
  • Knowledge of Kirundi is an added advantage.
